Arno van Herk

Synergio

How to develop a managed library of reusable systems, subsystems, and components.

Bio.
Arno van Herk believes that lasting improvement starts by making complexity understandable and
giving people practical ways to act. Not through process for process’s sake, but by combining clear
requirements, sound systems thinking, and continuous learning.
Arno is a Managing Partner and experienced consultant at Synergio. Since joining the firm in 2006,
he has helped organizations improve product development through Systems Engineering,
Requirements Engineering, and scalable ways of working. His assignments span energy,
infrastructure, high-tech, telecommunications, financial services, and public-sector organizations.
His strength lies in leading, involving, and enabling teams to achieve sustainable change. Arno
connects business needs with technical development, sharpens requirements and processes, and
helps organizations embed improvements in day-to-day delivery. He combines a hands-on problem-
solving style with experience in Lean-Agile and Scaled Agile environments.
Before Synergio, Arno held technical and delivery leadership roles at Compuware and worked as an
information analyst. Across every engagement, he rolls up his sleeves to turn complex development
challenges into focused collaboration, measurable improvement, and better results. A recurring
theme in his career is applying high-end productivity tools which can assist in achieving objectives.

Abstract.
In complex engineering environments, standardization is no longer optional: it is essential for
delivering predictable, scalable, and high-quality outcomes. Yet many organizations struggle
not with defining standards, but with embedding them in everyday engineering practice. This
presentation builds on Synergio’s earlier contribution, “Standards Don’t Standardize,” and
explores how organizations can turn standards from static agreements into actively used
engineering assets.
Synergio’s project-to-product-to-platform growth model offers a practical path for achieving
this transition. Central to the model is the development of a managed library of reusable
systems, subsystems, and components. By systematically capturing, governing, and reusing
these assets across products, organizations can reduce duplication, improve consistency,
and accelerate development.
Realizing this project-to-product-to-platform journey requires rich Systems Engineering
tooling that can assist organizations throughout this entire journey from start (projects) to
finish (platforms). Capabilities such as end-to-end traceability, version and configuration
management, variant management, baselining, and branching and merging are needed to
maintain control while enabling reuse and evolution across projects, products, and platforms.
Through a focused tutorial and practical examples, we will demonstrate how these
capabilities support the creation, governance, and application of reusable engineering assets
in TopTeam. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how powerful tooling can help
move standardization from intent to implementation and make reuse a integral part of
Systems Engineering practice.
