Are we using Systems Engineering for the right purpose?

Bio.

Paul Schreinemakers is an ESEP and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical engineering and is a Master of Science in Engineering Product Design. Paul’s experience covers 35 years of product development and consultancy for space systems, defence, oil & gas and the rail, road & waterway domains. Since 2003 he is an independent consultant for organizations and teams in the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. Paul has recently retired.

Paul has served for INCOSE in multiple roles. He was member of various Chapter based and International Working Groups, President of the Netherlands chapter in 2005 and 2006, General chair of the 2008 INCOSE International Symposium, the Associate Director for Events in the years 2009 to 2012. At the IW 2013 Paul was installed as Deputy Technical Director and the Technical Director in 2015 – 2016. After serving as EMEA sector director for 2,5 years he has switched from serving the international SE community towards doing so in the Netherlands. He currently is President-elect of the Netherlands Chapter for a second term and is expected to serve as president in 2027 end 2028.

 

Aside of the activities for INCOSE, Paul Schreinemakers is also serving as President of the Golf & Country Club Geijsteren.

Abstract.

This paper is addressing a void in many information sources about Systems Engineering. The true purpose of Systems Engineering, from a decision-making perspective, is addressed in this paper. That purpose is: to provide the right information, at the correct abstraction level and at the right point in time, for decision making. This statement is supported by identifying it’s relevant parameters, followed by a few examples of mismatches related to these parameters. Finaly, some suggestions are made about how to find the sweet spot of presenting information for decision-making by relevant parties.
