The future of Systems Engineering Education in the Netherlands

Abstract
During this interactive workshop, we will discuss the current state and future of systems engineering education in the Netherlands, with a special focus on the role of INCOSE NL. The session will be opened by the Materiel and IT Command (COMMIT). COMMIT will address the increasing need for systems engineering within the Ministry of Defence and how they are taking steps to develop the necessary competencies.

Bio Joris van den Aker
Joris van den Aker is a Program Manager for Systems Engineering & (Digital) Business Transformation at TNO-ESI. He has over 25 years of experience introducing and developing systems engineering methodologies, working methods, and competencies in the Dutch high-tech industry. For the past two years, he has also been involved in various systems engineering-related initiatives in the defense sector.

Bio Mark Michielsen
Mark Michielsen heads the Knowledge Center for (Weapon) System Management at the Ministry of Defence. The Knowledge Center supports the Ministry of Defence in a broad sense in the areas of System Management and Supply Chain Management. After a period as a technical officer in the Royal Netherlands Air Force and a short stint in the private sector, Mark has worked for 23 years as a civilian employee at the Ministry of Defence. During this time, he has gained broad experience in engineering, maintenance management, system safety, and related topics. Since 2024, a collaboration with TNO/ESI has been underway to expand and standardize System Engineering knowledge within the Ministry of Defence.
